Best Flies for Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass
Bass are the number one sport fish in America. Bass are exciting to fish for as they are tough, strong and often eat fly patterns well. They live in all 50 states and you are probably only a short drive from the nearest bass lake, pond, stream or river.
Flies for Catching Bass Come in Two Main Categories:
- Surface flies imitate a number of items in a bass' diet including frogs, mice and dying or wounded baitfish. Surface flies can produce some spectacular fly fishing.
- Sub-surface flies also come in a number of different styles that imitate their diet living below the water's surface. Baitfish, leeches and crayfish are among these food items. We have a large number of patterns in the shop to imitate these items.
Rods and Reels for Catching Bass
Typically 6 to 8 weight fly rods are used for bass both largemouth and smallmouth. Pick a rod weight that matches the size of the fish you intend to encounter along with the size of the flies you will be using. Fast action rods are important to help you throw accurate casts, cast large flies and throw longer casts to cover more water efficiently.
Fly reels for bass fishing calls for a simple reel where paying for a drag isn't a necessity. Something that matches the weight of the rod to balance it out is really all you need.
Bass Fishing Techniques
While smallmouth bass have a tendency to be found around rocks and gravel, largemouth bass tend to hang out around grass, weeds and wood. Lowlight times of the day and evening are often the best time to fish surface patterns but that doesn't mean you can't catch them on top at mid-day. Lily pad areas and slop are great places to fish topwater too. Pay attention to docks as many of these will hold decent fish. As summer heats up, bass tend to move deeper and inhabit weed beds. Look for weed edges and points inside the weed beds to try and locate active fish. Sub-surface patterns and sinking type lines are often in order here. Vary fly patterns and retrieves until you get success. Find a pattern and work that pattern until things change.
Smallmouth bass fishing techniques can vary from season to season. They will also vary depending on the water you will be fishing. Locating the fish is the first thing you need to do and then adjusting your flies, stripping techniques and water column location to find success.
