Dave Whitlock’s Rubber Leg Squirrel Nymph is one of The Fly Fishers' favorite nymph flies. In smaller sizes we fish it like a traditional trout nymph. In the bigger sizes we use it fly fishing for panfish and as a dropper fly below a bass popper when fly fishing smallmouth bass. The size 6 Rubber Leg Squirrel Nymph is one of our favorite carp flies when fly fishing the flats of Lake Michigan for carp.

Bought it for early season Bluegills in the Mid Atlantic region (Virginia). Have not tried it out yet.

I had to come back for more of these--they are by far one of my most productive flies for smallmouth along the Georgian Bay region of Ontario. I've found the Fly Fisher's variety of the squirrel nymph to be the best quality. They hold up well to aggressive strikes, but after a summer of constant hammering, I came back for more. I like to fish them alone or as a dropper behind a bass bug. Both ways get the bass fired up, and I even had a double hook up last August where one bass hit the popper and another one picked up the nymph. Good stuff.
