Recommended fly rods for fly fishing peacock bass.

A tropical import from South America, the peacock bass first showed up stateside in Florida during the 1950s. Since then, the species has moved into waters throughout southeast Florida’s canals and connected lakes. With their wildly colorful markings, peacock bass are a prized catch, and one of the most spirited catches in bass fishing. The fly rods  highlighted here are all excellent choices for peacock bass fishing.

Fishing for peacock bass involves a lot of casting, often hundreds in a day. Casting distance is usually in the 30 to 60-foot range, but accuracy is critical. Because of the large flies used and the aggressive tapers on the fly lines, we recommend a lightweight, fast action rod and a reel with good drag. The strikes can come fast and furious, so it’s a good idea to have two rods rigged and ready to go.

If you’re looking for a reel to go with your rod, check out our recommendation on fly reels for bass fishing.
