Before stacking, remove any long stray guard hairs and comb out the fine underfur at the base of the patch. This helps the fibers stack more evenly and keeps the finished fly clean and sparse.
Because the fibers are very fine, a small clump can contain more individual hairs than expected. Start with less material than you think you need, then gently tap the hair in a stacker to align the tips before tying it in.
Varner X-Fine Deer Hair is naturally better suited to low-flare, precision work, but it can be flared when needed by using a strong, high-tensile thread such as GSP and applying controlled pressure.
