Unlike standard marabou, ostrich drab fibers have a slightly more defined, resilient texture that helps create movement while maintaining shape in the water. Use full drabs for palmered collars and hackle-style wraps, or trim selected fibers for dubbing loops, composite loops, tails, bodies, and subtle movement accents.
Marabou Brothers Ostrich Drab is one of those materials that brings flies to life with very little effort. The fibers move naturally with current, strips, swings, and pauses, making them especially useful on Intruder-style flies, steelhead patterns, salmon flies, streamers, nymphs, and wet flies. For palmered collars, tie the feather in by the tip and wrap forward with even spacing. Stroke the fibers back with each turn to prevent trapped fibers and build a clean, flowing collar.
For composite loops, trim selected ostrich fibers from the stem and distribute them evenly in a dubbing loop with flash, dubbing, or other soft materials. This creates a mobile, breathable collar with excellent movement.
Use sparse wraps whenever possible. Ostrich drab has plenty of natural motion, so a lighter application often produces a cleaner silhouette and better movement than an overloaded fly.
For durable streamers and steelhead flies, secure the stem or trimmed fibers with firm thread wraps and a small touch of head cement or UV resin at key tie-in points.
