Lake Michigan Carp On The Fly

Jared and Peter from The Fly Fishers took to the flats of Lake Michigan to stalk carp with fly rods.  The June trip was a bit earlier than normal for their typical carp fly fishing schedule, but the warm summer-like weather had them plenty motivated to check it out.  There were no shortage of fish in the area, but the early timing had the majority of them in a spawn/post-spawn "milling stage".  Still, a few carp were taken on flies and even some bonus smallmouth bass showed up making for a fun day.

We typically use 7-9wt fly fishing rods and large arbor fly reels.  Leaders are 9, sometimes 10 feet and anywhere from 8 to 12 lb test.  Bonefish leaders work well in this kind of fly fishing.  For flies we use alot of crayfish patterns but will also cast some small leeches, nymph flies, and small baitfish flies.
