Flyfish Guanaja

     UserSubmitted/permit.jpgUserSubmitted/bonefish_1.jpgUserSubmitted/bonefish_flies.jpg

We have been checking out a number of places and have found a lodge that I think is a very special find. It boasts of one of the finest permit fisheries on the planet, large bonefish and tarpon as well as other species. Check out the information below.

We are talking about the island of Guanaja just outside of Roatan, Honduras. Flyfish Guanaja is owned by Steve Brown of Colorado. Steve guides out of Colorado in the summer and heads south to Guanaja in the winter.

There's so much to tell you I don't know where to start but I guess I will start with the fishing. We stay on the south side of the island, in the south cays to be exact. There is fishing on all 4 sides of the island. This is not a big fishery so while we will be the only anglers, there is plenty of room to fish without seeing the same water everyday and stepping on each others toes. There is not a lot of boat running. A trip to the north side of the island only takes about 25 minutes and that's the farthest (opposite side of the island) run. Fishing is a combination of wading and boat fishing. Guanaja has sand, grass and coral flats surrounding it. Flies have to have weed guards but there is a well supplied fly tying area and the guides will add any needed weed guards to your flies. These guys love experimenting with new patterns and the tying bench sees a lot of use.

The Fish: Honduran bonefish regularly run 5 to 8 pounds and 10 pounders are caught in front of the lodge. Guanaja has a very good permit fishery, one of the best in the world in fact. The south cays have permit tailing all over the flats and there are also lots found in deeper water and in river mouths. Permit fishing is permit fishing but this is one of theee places to go for them.
Tarpon and snook are found on the north side of the island. This is more of a mangrove type area. Baby tarpon from 5 to 30 or 40 pounds are always present and are sight casted to in these areas on moving tides. There are giants found right near the docks of one of the towns too. They are there feeding on the chum of the commercial fishermen's fish cleanings. Flies dead-drifted in these areas can lead to hook-ups on tarpon well over 100 pounds. While this isn't classic tarpon fishing it becomes a cultural event as the locals cheer you on while fighting the big girls. There's worse ways to spend a few hours. Snook fishing can be very prolific here as well.
There are lots of cudas, jacks and even trigger fish to be caught here as well. Triggers can run up to 25 pounds and are a fun change of pace. We have caught these before and they are pretty cool.

The food here is very good. The lodge provides us with our own chef that has been trained in some of the finest schools in the US. They provide a very extensive menu. Local rum, beer, tequila and soda is included in the price.

As for the lodge the original lodge is a beautiful house that handles 6 guests with anglers to a bedroom. Should we need more room another lodge house on the next cay will hold up to 10 anglers. 10 anglers is the maimum number of anglers that the operation will take.

Honduras is an English speaking country and the folks here are very friendly. Most of the tourist trade is diving and kite sailing and the locals appreciate the tourists.

The price for 6 days/7nights is $3500 including the bar tab. For an additional fee diving can be added to the trip if you like.

Roatan is easy to get to from Houston, Atlanta and Miami. We would fly to Roatan and take a short flight to Guanaja. The lodge would arrange this flight. It runs around $150 or so.

Agua Boa Amazon Peacock Bass

Agua Boa Amazon Peacock BassRated one of the Top 10 Forbes Life Fly Fishing Lodges in the world Agua Boa is one of the finest fishing lodges you can fish. Agua Boa is extremely remote but has unbelievably deluxe accommodations featuring cottages for two that have air-conditioning, twin queen size beds and tiled private bathrooms. The lodge has a swim-up bar on its 20-meter swimming pool, dining room, great food and even satellite TV and wi fi connections for those of you who need to stay connected.

As for the fishing, this is a crystal clear river system that boasts of great numbers of peacock bass with large peacocks being caught here too. This is a fly-fishing only lodge to protect the fish as only barbless single hooks are allowed to protect the fish but weighted flies can be cast with spinning gear. Guides use poles and paddles to get anglers into casting position and there are even some wading opportunities available. There are 18 species of fish that have been caught on flies in the Agua Boa so peacocks aren’t the only species available to the angler. This fishery, because of its spring fed nature, remains very consistent in water flow. This is an issue that causes problems for many other lodges.

We would be happy to help you book your peacock bass fly fishing adventure or you can join one of our hosted trips to Agua Boa. Call Pat at 414-259-8100 or email him at info@theflyfishers.com for help in booking a trip.
